Mozart Dances - Mark Morris Dance Group

Mark Morris' week-long Luminato Artist Residency will include the Canadian premiere of Mozart Dances. Inspired by the timeless music of Mozart, Mozart Dances features 16 dancers performing against the bold backdrops of British artist Howard Hodgkins and accompanied live by members of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra. Although performances of Mozart Dances are not during school hours, selected school groups will be invited to a special behind-the-scenes tour, followed by a question & answer session with dancers and members of the creative team (limited availability). Recommended for students Grades 4-8.

Workshops
Local musicians will invite students to explore the music of Mozart and the powerful role music plays in evoking mood, images, and story in ballet.

School Visits
MMDG dancers will introduce students to MMDG's unique style and dance vocabulary. Students will explore the connections between music and movement through dynamic demonstrations, interactive movement exercises, and lively discussion. (Limited availability)

Sanctuary Song

This dynamic opera for voice, piano, violin, and percussion uses video and Asian influenced dance to tell the story of an Asian elephant poached at a young age from the jungles of Indonesia. She recalls her remarkable life in captivity far from home as her keeper of 22 years leads her on a journey to sanctuary in the hills of Tennessee. The themes of friendship and freedom, the power of memory and the wonder of communication in the human and natural worlds resonate in this moving new production that audiences will never forget. World premiere. Recommended for students Grades 4-8.

Pre-Festival school visits from the composer and writer will introduce students to this unique fusion of theatre and opera for young audiences. Post-performance dance and music workshops exploring the themes of friendship and communication will offer students the opportunity to connect with their individual responses to Sanctuary Song. Rocket and the Queen of Dreams

This unique and imaginative theatre experience for younger students uses shadow theatre, puppetry, live performance, and original music to create a journey into the dream world of a young boy and the darkness and light to be found there. In creating the show, playwright David Craig worked with and gathered stories, pictures, and images from hundreds of primary children about their dreams, nighttime fears, and bedtime routines. World premiere. Recommended for students Grades K-3.

Workshops
Pre-Festival school visits from the playwright will introduce students to the creative development of the production and a multidisciplinary approach to storytelling using drama, music, and shadow puppetry. Working with the creators of Puppetmongers Theatre, students will learn about the art of shadow puppetry, where shadows are cast upon a lit screen and stories are brought to life. Students will create their own shadow puppets, and be encouraged to use these imaginative creations in short collaborative shadow puppet performances in the classroom. Dan Zanes and Friends

Drawing on a wealth of musical traditions, Dan Zanes, his band, and a variety of eclectic special guests create a rollicking "Woodstock for kids," including exuberant American traditional songs, dance classics, and smart, inventive originals. During his week-long Luminato Artist Residency, Zanes will engage with the Toronto community through a variety of sing-a-longs, workshops, question & answer sessions, and other related events - experiences which will culminate in his Luminato performances at The Music Hall on Sunday, June 15. Recommended for students Grades JK-5.

Prior to the Festival, local musicians will lead in-school music workshops that focus on the connections between music and Toronto's diverse communities.

School Visits
Dan Zanes will invite students to share the songs they learned in their pre-Festival workshops - an informal music exchange that will promote crosscultural understanding.

Exploring the Science of Music at the Ontario Science Centre
Saturday, June 14, 10:30am
In partnership with the Ontario Science Centre, Luminato will offer an interactive workshop where families will experiment with unusual materials to explore the science of soundwaves, frequencies and vibrations, and hear Dan perform a few of his signature songs (free with admission to the Ontario Science Centre). Following the workshop, Dan Zanes will also engage with other areas of the Science Centre through informal and interactive family sing-a-longs.

This extension of the Luminato Volunteer Program provides a specialized group of festival volunteers with unique opportunities to experience the Festival while participating in relevant training, networking and arts-focused professional development workshops.

Building on the Mark Morris Dance Group's ground-breaking Dance for Parkinson's program, MMDG dancers will lead a special dance workshop for people with Parkinson's disease and their caregivers.

Youth Outreach

Youth outreach programs include various artist workshops, guided tours, volunteer opportunities and internships with the Festival. Youth participation is also central to the Luminato StreetScape installations in Regent Park. Local artists and youth will work collaboratively to create their own interpretations of street art and weave it through the narrative of their neighbourhood.
