One of the world's
foremost choreographers, William Forsythe is celebrated for his part in
re-inventing classical dance as a dynamic 21st-century art form (his piece the
second detail is performed in this year's festival by the National Ballet
and he also appears in
Slow Dancing). Forsythe's more recent explorations with The Forsythe Company have taken him beyond the confines of the stage into the realms of visual art, architecture and interactive multimedia.
In this, its Canadian premiere, Forsythe's interactive video installation City of Abstracts turns a camera's eye on the streets of Toronto. As people pass by, their moving images are captured, distorted and projected onto a screen, turning the street scene into an improvised dance of spiraled, stretched bodies. When the subjects recognize their own participation in this tableau, they are encouraged to offer further movement, becoming impromptu choreographers.
