Green Flag Song

Joni Mitchell

Black Watch Joni Mitchell's mixed-media canvases offer a poetic discourse on humanity's struggle with itself.

The world knows Joni Mitchell primarily as a singer and songwriter. But she's also a visual artist who brings to her vivid and arresting images the same profound social, political and spiritual conviction that informs her music.

Dark ironies abound in these massive triptych canvases depicting narratives on the histories of war and revolution. As a comment on the nature of the mass media, Mitchell captured her images - both documentary and dramatized - from the screen of a dying TV, then manipulated them to reflect her own distinctive vision of the world we live in. The work's nightmarish themes of death and destruction exist in stark contrast to the greens and pinks throughout her colour palette.

A deeply personal response to centuries of human strife and fear, Green Flag Song also embodies the artist's hope that its power may foster greater collective awareness of the need for change.
