Luminato Festival's Programming Overview
Thank you for your interest in Luminato! We are delighted that you would like to be a part of our festival and we look forward to hearing more about your project.
In June 2007, the Luminato Festival launched with a multi-genre celebration featuring theatre, classical and contemporary music, dance, visual arts, film, literature and more. The festival features highly acclaimed World Premieres, innovative new work and unexpected collaborations that result in unforgettable creative moments.
Each year, we collaborate with many of Canada's most accomplished arts leaders and organizations. This results in the presentation of international artists and work that had not previously been seen in Toronto, creative collaborations between Toronto and international artists, and the launch of new Canadian work that has gone on to tour international markets.
Luminato has assembled an internal Programming Department to work with local and international artists and organizations on the planning of future festivals. The Programming Department works closely with and is advised by the Artistic Committee, a group of Canada's most accomplished and esteemed arts leaders who help to shape the overall vision for the festival.
Luminato has Three Major Programming CriteriaCollaboration: presenting exciting new cross-genre collaborations, and encouraging Canadian artists and organizations to work together, or with an international partner (or partners) to create new work. Luminato has strong ties to the international performing arts community, so we encourage artists or organizations who are submitting proposals to use us as a resource while developing an idea.Diversity: work that reflects the broad and unique composition of Toronto.
Accessibility: taking the arts into non-traditional spaces and outdoor public forums. A large percentage of Luminato's programming is free of charge and even our ticketed events are aimed at being affordable. We want everyone who wants to be a part of Luminato to be able to participate without barriers. Luminato is about "unexpected encounters with art" - people spontaneously engaging with artistic experiences during the festival just by being in Toronto.
As well, one of Luminato's primary objectives is to commission new work. We are particularly interested in projects that we can invest in at the ground level and help develop over time, with the intention that the finished work will premiere at a future festival. We are already working with a number of partners in this capacity on projects for 2011, 2012, 2013 and beyond.
It is also important to note that because of our desire to bring Toronto exciting new work for a specific 10 day period, Luminato cannot support local remounts of productions or exhibitions, or provide marketing support to other projects that happen during our festival dates. We also try to avoid presenting work that will have an indefinite run in Toronto either before or after the festival.
