When an artwork has been delivered to those who commissioned it, and has won a place in the public eye, to whom does it belong? And does anyone have the right to decide that it should be destroyed?

Those questions lie at the heart of Homage, a play inspired by the controversy that erupted in 2005, when a college in Sarnia, Ontario, citing safety concerns due to deterioration, demolished the monumental outdoor sculpture that had stood at its entrance for 31 years. Originally commissioned by the college, the Stonehenge-inspired red cedar piece had made the reputation of its creator, Haydn Llewellyn Davies, who subsequently became one of Canada’s best known public sculptors.

Written by Anthony Black, directed by Christian Barry, and performed in the midst of its own large-scale sculptural installation, Halifax-based 2b theatre company’s Homage is a universally poignant story of humanity’s desire for legacy pitted against the relentless march of time.

"Anthony Black's play is a profound, philosophical exploration of permanence, legacy, the value of art and mortality. This is an amazing piece of theatre."
