A sense of place has always been a key element of the murder mystery genre. The London of Sherlock Holmes, the Edinburgh of Inspector Rebus, the Yorkshire hills of Inspector Banks: in each case, the evocation of locale is central to the stories' appeal.

Deon Meyer, author of Devil's Peak and Blood Safari, has been called the king of South African crime fiction. His new novel, Thirteen Hours, follows Detective Inspector Benny Griessel through a typical day as he investigates a homicide in Cape Town. Meanwhile, here in Canada, Dublin-born John Brady, award-winning author of The Going Rate and eight other books in the Matt Minogue series, sets his thrillers amidst the politics and shifting economy of his native Ireland. Brady reads from the latest in the series, the upcoming A Long Hard Look.

Tying into this year's East/West theme, this literary evening of murder most foul also makes the perfect companion piece to The Infernal Comedy.

Authors

Deon Meyer lives in Melkbosstrand on the South African West Coast with his wife and four children. He has written five novels, including Blood Safari and Thirteen Hours (Random House Canada) all of which have been highly acclaimed and translated into several languages.

John Brady was born in Dublin, Ireland, he attended Trinity College there and graduated in sociology. He came to Canada in 1975 and after a stint as an elementary school teacher is now a full-time writer living in Bradford, Ontario.    Brady's writing is rooted in his upbringing. Brady uses the crime novel to probe the socio-economic and political tensions troubling Ireland. With Inspector Matt Minogue of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Dublin detachment of the Garda, the Irish national police force, as his ‘Everyman’, Brady skilfully dissects Irish society and mores in a series of novels that rank as some of the best writing in the genre being published anywhere.
