A World of Creativity - June 5-14, 2009

The Children's CrusadeComposed by R. Murray Schafer - World Premiere

The Children's Crusade
90 mins

Acclaimed Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer explores the purity, innocence and passion of children who wanted to change the world.

The world premiere of a dynamic, full-length new opera commissioned from composer R. Murray Schafer in celebration of his 75th birthday. Based on an extraordinary episode in 13th-century France, when thousands of children and young people were persuaded to embark on an ill-fated expedition to the Holy Land, The Children's Crusade tells a tragic, yet inspiring story of purity, innocence and passion pitted against cynicism and cruelty.

The diverse talents of more than 100 performers, including the Canadian Children's Opera Company and the period-instrument virtuosos of The Toronto Consort, combine to bring this spectacular operatic extravaganza to glorious life. Directed by Tim Albery.

Note:  Please note that the performances are general admission and patrons stand for the length of the show. As the performance takes place in a warehouse and does require movement through the space, we advise you to wear sensible shoes. Rest areas with limited seating are provided throughout the venue. Not recommended for children under 12.

Produced in association with Soundstreams Canada.
Co-commissioned by the Koerner Foundation, Laidlaw Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council and Luminato.
Wardrobe assistance generously provided by Mark’s Work Wearhouse.

Meet the artists at a panel discussion.  See Illuminations on the right side of this page.
