Luminato's Artistic Leadership
A multi-layered artistic team guides Luminato's artistic vision and programming. Together with CEO Janice Price, they shape the artistic quality of programming selected to ensure the highest international standard while truly reflecting the unique character of contemporary Toronto.
Chris Lorway leads the artistic team as Luminato's Artistic Director. Chris has worked extensively in the international arts community for more than 12 years and has been involved in a number of high-profile festivals including The Lincoln Center Festival, The New Yorker Festival, The Henson International Puppet Festival, and Nova Scotia's Celtic Colours International Festival which he helped to launch. Prior to joining Luminato, Chris was a Senior Consultant at one of the world's leading strategic consulting firms for the cultural sector, AEA Consulting. While at AEA, Chris worked on strategic initiatives with Carnegie Hall, The Royal Shakespeare Company, The Edinburgh Festivals and Jacob's Pillow. He also worked on a number of large-scale development projects including the West Kowloon Cultural District (Hong Kong), the redevelopment of the World Trade Center site in New York and "Bring New Orleans Back" a city-led commission that examined how culture could be used as a catalyst to rebuild a major American city.
Two international consultants - Graham Sheffield, the Artistic Director of the Barbican Centre in London, and David Spelman, Artistic Director of the New York Guitar Festival - assisted in planning and curating the 2009 festival. Rounding out the team is Devyani Salzman (Curator - Literary Program and “Illuminations", Luminato's ancillary program of lectures, panels and workshops), Jessica Dargo Caplan (Associate Director – Education and Outreach), Mitchell Marcus (Associate Producer – Theatre, Dance, Film and Music), Robert VanderBerg (Associate Producer – Visual Arts & Public Installations) and Scott McVittie (Associate Producer – Live Events).
This programming team works closely with a local Festival Advisory Committee, a group of renowned local arts leaders working with Luminato, to ensure that the festival achieves a balance between presenting the best international programming to Toronto audiences and incubating global performing opportunities for Canadian artists and arts organizations.
